Scientific notation converter

Provide a number in decimal, scientific, or E-notation to get scientific, E-notation, engineering, and real-number forms.

Accepts 3672.2, 2.3e11, or 3.5×10^-12 style input. Precision is digits after the coefficient decimal.

How it works

What is scientific notation?

Scientific notation expresses numbers in a form that makes very large or very small values convenient to write and compute. A number is written as a base b (the significand or coefficient) multiplied by 10 raised to an integer exponent n: b × 10ⁿ Examples of decimal vs scientific form: 5 → 5 × 10⁰ 700 → 7 × 10² 1,000,000 → 1 × 10⁶ 0.0004212 → 4.212 × 10⁻⁴ −5,000,000,000 → −5 × 10⁹

Calculations with scientific notation

Addition and subtraction: first rewrite each term to the same power of 10, then add or subtract the coefficients. Example sketch: 1.432×10² + 800×10⁻¹ − 0.001×10⁵ → rewrite to ×10² → (1.432 + 0.8 − 1)×10² = 1.232×10² Multiplication: multiply coefficients and add exponents. Example: (1.432×10²)×(800×10⁻¹)×(0.001×10⁵) → 1.1456×10⁶ Division: divide coefficients and subtract exponents, then renormalize so one non-zero digit sits left of the decimal. (1.432×10²)÷(800×10⁻¹)÷(0.001×10⁵) = 1.79×10⁻²

Engineering notation

Engineering notation is like scientific notation except the exponent n is restricted to a multiple of 3 (…, −6, −3, 0, 3, 6, 9, …). That aligns values with SI prefixes: 10³ kilo, 10⁶ mega, 10⁹ giga, 10⁻³ milli, and so on. Example: 1.234 × 10⁸ (scientific) becomes 123.4 × 10⁶ (engineering).

E-notation

E-notation replaces “× 10” with E (or e): bEn means b × 10ⁿ. It appears on calculators and in programming when superscripts are inconvenient. 5 × 10⁰ → 5E0 7 × 10² → 7E2 4.212 × 10⁻⁴ → 4.212E-4 −5 × 10⁹ → −5E9
