How it works

Shows the classic long-division tableau: divisor outside, dividend under the bar, quotient above, with multiply/subtract rows. Repeating decimals use parentheses.

dividend = quotient × divisor + remainder

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: try 100 ÷ 7 for remainder 14 R2, or 1 ÷ 3 for a repeating decimal 0.(3).

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

Try 100 ÷ 7 for remainder 14 R2, or 1 ÷ 3 for a repeating decimal 0.(3).

How it works

Parts of a division problem

The dividend is the number being divided, the divisor divides it, and the quotient is the result. When the dividend is not evenly divisible, keep a remainder (for example 100 ÷ 7 = 14 R2).

How to perform long division

Write the divisor to the left of a division bracket and the dividend under the bar. Work left to right: form a partial dividend, write how many times the divisor fits above, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Add a decimal point and zeros to continue for a decimal answer.

Quotient, remainder, and decimals

Integer division gives a whole quotient and a remainder less than the divisor. The decimal expansion may terminate or repeat; repeating blocks are shown in parentheses.
