How it works

What is a percentage?

A percentage is a number that represents a fraction of 100. For example, 35% means 35 out of every 100, which is the same as the decimal 0.35 or the fraction 35/100. If 25 out of 50 students are male, the ratio is 25 ÷ 50 = 0.5. Multiplying by 100 gives 50% — half of the class.

Percentage formula

The core relationship uses three values: amount = (percent ÷ 100) × whole Provide any two and solve for the third. Example: if percent × 30 = 1.5, then percent = 1.5 ÷ 30 = 0.05, or 5%.

Percentage difference

Percent difference divides the absolute gap between two numbers by their average, then multiplies by 100: |V1 − V2| ÷ ((V1 + V2) ÷ 2) × 100 Example: |10 − 6| ÷ ((10 + 6) ÷ 2) × 100 = 4 ÷ 8 × 100 = 50%.

Percentage increase and decrease

Change compares a new value to a starting value. To apply a known percent: Increase: start × (1 + percent ÷ 100) Decrease: start × (1 − percent ÷ 100) Example: 500 increased by 10% → 500 × 1.1 = 550. 500 decreased by 10% → 500 × 0.9 = 450.
