How it works

What is volume?

Volume quantifies how much three-dimensional space a substance or container occupies. The SI unit is the cubic meter (m³). Capacity is often quoted in liters or gallons.

Common solid formulas

Sphere V=(4/3)πr³. Cone V=(1/3)πr²h. Cube V=a³. Cylinder V=πr²h. Rectangular tank V=lwh. Capsule V=πr²h+(4/3)πr³. Spherical cap V=(1/3)πh²(3R−h). Square pyramid V=(1/3)a²h. Conical frustum V=(1/3)πh(r²+rR+R²). Ellipsoid V=(4/3)πabc. Tube V=(π/4)(d1²−d2²)L.

Units and conversions

Enter every length in the same unit (ft, in, m, …). Results convert to m³, liters, milliliters, cubic inches/feet/yards, and US gallons.

Spherical cap and related shapes

A spherical cap needs any two of base radius r, sphere radius R, and height h. Then V=(1/3)πh²(3R−h). A capsule is a cylinder with hemispherical ends. A tube volume is outer cylinder minus the hollow inner cylinder.
