How it works

A circle’s primary measures share the radius. π links circumference and diameter: π = C/D.

D=2R · C=2πR · A=πR²

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: try R=5, D=10, C=2π (unit circle), or A=25π. Diagram highlights the known measure.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

Try R=5, D=10, C=2π (unit circle), or A=25π. Diagram highlights the known measure.

Circle calculator

Provide any one of radius, diameter, circumference, or area — the calculator recovers the remaining circle measures using π.

510C

Enter any one value below (others clear as you type). Then calculate.

All four quantities are linked. Editing one field clears the others so only one input drives the solve.

How it works

What is a circle?

Geometrically, a circle is a simple closed curve: the set of all points in a plane equidistant from a fixed center (origin). That common distance is the radius. The same shape can be described as the path of a point that keeps a constant distance from the center as it moves.

Parts of a circle

Center: point equidistant from the circumference. Radius R: center to any point on the circle. Diameter D: longest chord, through the center (D=2R). Circumference C: length around the circle. Arc: part of the circumference (major/minor). Chord: segment joining two points on the circle (a diameter is a special chord). Secant: line through two points of the circle. Tangent: line touching at exactly one point. Sector: pie slice between two radii (major if central angle > 180°, minor if < 180°).

The constant π

π is the ratio of circumference to diameter for every circle, about 3.14159. It is irrational (not an exact fraction, despite approximations like 22/7) and transcendental (not a root of a non-zero rational polynomial). That is why ancient efforts to “square the circle” with compass and straightedge ultimately failed — proved impossible once π was shown transcendental (Lindemann, 1882).

Circle formulas

With radius R: diameter D = 2R, circumference C = 2πR, area A = πR². Invert as needed: R = D/2, R = C/(2π), R = √(A/π). Enter any one known to fill the rest.
