How it works

Cartesian modes use the distance formula. Geo mode estimates surface distance between lat/lon points (map, paste, or typed coords).

√(Δx²+Δy²[+Δz²]) · haversine · Lambert (WGS84)

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: geo defaults New York → Los Angeles (~3940 km). Try (0,0)→(3,4) in 2D, or drop pins on the map.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

How it works

Distance in a coordinate system

In 2D, d = √((x2−x1)² + (y2−y1)²). In 3D add (z2−z1)² under the radical. Midpoint is the average of each coordinate. Point order does not change the distance.

Distance on Earth

Latitude and longitude locate points on Earth. Shortest surface path approximates a great circle. Results include km, miles, nautical miles, meters, feet, and yards.

Haversine formula

Haversine treats Earth as a sphere of mean radius ~6371 km. Errors can reach about 0.5% because Earth is an ellipsoid.

Lambert's formula

Lambert's formula adjusts the central angle for WGS84 flattening and is typically accurate to tens of meters over thousands of kilometers — preferred for long surface arcs.
