How it works

Rise over run. Provide two points, or a point with distance and either slope m or angle θ.

m=(y₂−y₁)/(x₂−x₁)=tan(θ)

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: default (3,4)→(6,8): m=4/3, d=5, θ≈53.13°. Or use Point + slope with d and m.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

How it works

What is slope?

Slope m measures steepness and direction of a line: rise over run. Larger |m| means a steeper line. m = (y2−y1)/(x2−x1) and m = tan(θ) for incline angle θ from the positive x-axis.

Two points known

Given (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), compute Δx, Δy, m = Δy/Δx, distance d = √(Δx²+Δy²), and θ = arctan(m). Example: (3,4) to (6,8) → m = 4/3, d = 5, θ ≈ 53.13°.

Point, distance, and incline

Given one point, length d, and either m or θ, the second point is x2 = x1 + d cos θ, y2 = y1 + d sin θ (with m = tan θ). Useful when a survey line has known grade and length.

Direction of the line

m > 0: increasing (up left to right). m < 0: decreasing. m = 0: horizontal. Vertical lines have undefined slope (denominators of zero) and equation x = constant.
