How it works

σ uses n; s uses n−1. SEM ≈ s/√n. Margin of error ≈ z·SEM at your confidence level. Variance is std dev squared.

σ=√(SSD/n) · s=√(SSD/(n−1)) · MOE≈z·SEM

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: try 10, 12, 23, 23, 16, 23, 21, 16 — mean 18, s ≈ 5.24, SEM ≈ 1.85, 95% MOE ≈ ±3.63. Or 1,3,4,7,8 for population σ ≈ 2.58.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

Standard deviation calculator

Enter numbers separated by commas. Get population σ and sample s, variances, mean, sum, standard error, and an approximate margin of error for the mean.

Data for margin of error

Confidence level

Choose Sample or Population for the standard error used in margin of error. Confidence uses a normal two-sided z. Variance is the square of the matching standard deviation.

How it works

What standard deviation measures

Standard deviation (σ) is a measure of variation or dispersion — how spread out values are around the mean (μ or x-bar). A low standard deviation means points cluster near the mean; a high value means a wider range. Variance is the standard deviation squared. This tool always reports both population and sample versions when the data size allows.

Population standard deviation σ

Use population formulas when the list is the entire population of interest. σ is the square root of the variance of that full set: SSD divided by N. Worked idea: for 1, 3, 4, 7, 8 the mean is 4.6 and population σ is about 2.577.

Sample standard deviation s

When the list is a sample from a larger population, the corrected sample standard deviation divides SSD by n−1 (Bessel’s correction). It is the usual estimator of population spread and is still biased for very small samples, but far better than dividing by n alone.

Standard error and margin of error

The standard error of the mean approximates the spread of the sample mean: typically s/√n (or σ/√n for a population). Multiplying by a two-sided normal z critical value for a confidence level gives a margin of error — and mean ± MOE is an approximate confidence interval for the mean. For deeper interval methods see the Confidence Interval calculator.

Where it is used

Standard deviation appears in quality control (acceptable spread around a target), climate comparison (same mean, different spread), finance (volatility of returns), and any setting where you need how far a typical value can sit from the mean — not only the average itself.

Related calculators

Descriptive stats tools share the same data-entry style. Average focuses on the mean alone; sequences generate ordered lists instead of summarizing a sample.
