How it works

Mean is sum/n. Median is the middle of the ordered list. Mode is the most frequent value(s). Range is max − min. All four are reported with steps.

mean=Σx/n · median · mode · range=max−min

When to use

Use this tool when you need to: classic set 10, 2, 38, 23, 38, 23, 21 → mean ≈22.14, median 23, modes 23 & 38 (bimodal), range 36. Try the outlier example to see median vs mean.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your values in the fields above.
  2. Review the formula and any mode options for your problem.
  3. Read the result and the step-by-step solution.

Mean, median, mode & range

Provide numbers separated by commas (spaces and new lines also work). The calculator returns the arithmetic mean, median, mode(s), and range — the four measures every intro stats course starts with.

Separate numbers with commas, spaces, or new lines.

How it works

Mean

In its simplest form the mean is the arithmetic mean (average, mathematical expectation): the sum of all values divided by how many there are. It is often written x-bar; a population mean uses mu. For 10, 2, 38, 23, 38, 23, 21 the sum is 155 so the mean is 155/7 ≈ 22.143. Other means exist (weighted, geometric), but this tool computes the ordinary arithmetic mean. Because every point is included equally, a single extreme outlier can pull the mean far from the rest of the data.

Median

The median divides ordered data into two equal halves. Sort the list; if n is odd, take the middle value; if n is even, average the two central values. For 2, 10, 21, 23, 23, 38, 38 the median is 23. Adding the outlier 1,027,892 barely changes the median (still 23) while the mean jumps above 100,000 — so when only one measure can be shown and data has heavy extremes, the median is often a better typical value than the mean.

Mode

The mode is the value with the highest number of recurrences. Data can be unimodal, bimodal (two modes share that peak frequency), or multimodal. For 2, 10, 21, 23, 23, 38, 38 both 23 and 38 appear twice, so both are modes. Unlike mean and median, mode also applies to non-numeric categories (for example, which brand sold most). If every value appears exactly once, this calculator reports no mode.

Range

Range is the difference between the largest and smallest values — the simplest spread measure. For 2…38 the range is 36. Adding 1,027,892 expands the range to 1,027,890. Like the mean, range is sensitive to outliers because it depends only on the two extremes.

Use them together

Mean, median, mode, and range each answer a different question about the same sample. Computing all four reduces the risk of misrepresenting skewed or multimodal data. For full variance, standard deviation, and quartiles, open the Statistics or Standard Deviation calculators.

Descriptive stats tools share the same data-entry style. Average focuses on the mean alone; sequences generate ordered lists instead of summarizing a sample.
