Roman numerals

Encode integers with Roman symbols and subtractive pairs.

Encodings & numbers

  • Number base conversion
  • Roman numerals
  • ASCII and Unicode code points
  • Scientific notation
  • IPv4 address forms

Formula

Map Roman symbols (I, V, X, L, C, D, M) with subtractive pairs (IV, IX, XL, …)

Explanation

Values add by default (VI = 6). Subtractive pairs place a smaller symbol before a larger one (IV = 4). Standard ranges cover typical calendar and outline uses; very large numbers need additional notation.

Variables

  • symbolsI=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000
  • subtractive pairsIV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM

When to use

Dates, outlines, clock faces, and historical references.
